The newly redeveloped Maryhill Burgh Halls is set to become a thriving community hub once again following the completion of restoration works by GRAHAM Construction.
Maryhill Burgh Halls had fallen into disrepair and was closed for the best part of a decade before work began in 2009.
The £7.4m, 23-month contract saw GRAHAM carefully strip back both existing B-listed historical buildings – the Burgh Hall and the old Police Station – before rebuilding, renovating and extending the facility to provide a multi-use community complex.
The original building was opened in 1878 displaying Renaissance features such as columns, arches and domes. More than a century on, Maryhill Burgh Halls Trust – the group leading the restoration project – was keen to see as many original features restored or recreated to stand alongside the impressive new build areas.
Much of the work co-ordinated by GRAHAM required craftsman capabilities such as stonemasonry, specialist joinery and slate and lead work. The final result is a beautifully restored building which comfortably fuses the old with the new, showcasing the Maryhill of the present against the backdrop of its earlier days.
Gary Holmes, Regional Director for GRAHAM Construction, said “The Maryhill Burgh Halls redevelopment has been a very interesting and rewarding project. The level of intricate work involved meant utilising more traditional craftsman practices alongside the extensive new build work.
“GRAHAM worked closely with the Maryhill Burgh Halls Trust as well as jmarchitects and a number of specialist subcontractors to realise the Trust’s vision for the new, rejuvenated Halls. The impressive end result highlights the dedication of all involved and I’m confident it will be warmly welcomed by the local community in Maryhill.”
The new facility comprises a modern public hall suitable for music, dance and theatre productions as well as weddings, conferences and functions; a cafe; heritage exhibition space; commercial and community recording studios; a nursery with private outdoor play space; and a courtyard garden, as well as meeting rooms and office space to let.
Hunter Reid, Project Co-ordinator and Company Secretary of the Maryhill Burgh Halls Trust, added: “The Trust has been very impressed with the abilities of GRAHAM Construction’s high quality delivery in terms of both new build and complex historical restoration work.
“The impeccable management and comprehensive supervision of experienced and highly skilled operatives and sub-contractors made for a smooth-running project with an incredible final result.
“I have been involved in the project for over seven years and it is very rewarding to witness such a magnificent re-birth of this important building, which will benefit Maryhill and the wider community for decades to come.”
