Peace Bridge, Derry

The Peace Bridge

Derry, Co-Londonderry

Design and construction of an iconic S-Shaped self anchored suspension bridge spanning between the east and west banks of the River Foyle.

The bridge connects the old Ebrington Barracks site to the city centre, and carries foot and cycle traffic.

The substructure comprises steel piles supporting abutments on both banks as well as two piers within the river and piers on the east bank.

The superstructure comprises three continuous spans of 65m, 100m and 65m over the river with two approach spans of 37m on the east bank.  The deck, which varies in width between 4m and 5.6m, comprises a fabricated triangular closed cell steel girder with cantilevered cross girders on one side, with a perforated aluminum decking system spanning between these cross girders.  The deck is supported by two pylons, each 32m tall, formed as six-sided fabricated steel sections.  The deck is supported off these pylons by 52mm diameter bar tendon hangers attached to a 120mm diameter locked coil strand suspension cable.
