Protecting the Environment
We play our part in reducing carbon emissions to help tackle climate change and operate in an environmentally sustainable manner.
This includes making the most efficient use of energy; reducing waste; recycling materials; using materials from sustainable sources; keeping pollutants, noise and dust to a minimum; and the use of environmentally friendly materials in the design of energy efficient buildings.
Minimise our Waste
Through careful planning and continual learning we ensure all possible opportunities are taken to minimise waste. All operating companies in the group seek to reduce, reuse and recycle waste and to conserve scarce natural resources where possible.
GRAHAM was among the first companies to sign up to the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) paving the way in the sustainability arena as the first construction company in NI to commit to the UK Government’s target of ‘Halving Waste to Landfill by 2012’. Over the period April 2012 to March 2013, the GRAHAM group companies diverted 84% of our generated waste from landfill.
Reducing Carbon Emissions and Energy Use
Reducing carbon emissions and increasing energy efficiency in the built environment is vital to help tackle the impact of global climate change. At GRAHAM we actively seek to reduce our carbon emissions and energy use in the infrastructure facilities we are responsible for designing, constructing or managing.
The Group’s ability to manage the construction of energy efficient, low maintenance buildings stems from our ethos to adopt BREEAM’s best practice in building methodology, which addresses a broad range of environmental impacts.
Our Corporate Headquarters reflects the strong commitment of the Company to sustainable construction, and acts as a flagship in our sustainable construction portfolio. Not content in achieving an ‘Excellent’ BREEAM rating at 79.18%, the highest ever achieved in Northern Ireland, the office in operational mode is saving an estimated 5208kg of carbon per month.
Use of Water and Sustainable Materials
The buildings and facilities we construct and maintain represent our greatest impact on climate change, and we aim to reduce our use of water and ensure we continue to procure materials with lower environmental impacts.
Our Group Headquarters was designed from the outset to encompass the latest water saving technologies that included harvesting rainwater, with a result that sees over 60% of the water used being recycled water.
Protecting Ecological Resources
Construction and Asset Management projects can impact significantly on biodiversity. At GRAHAM our aim is to proactively manage ecological issues on projects and seek to protect and enhance biodiversity.
Where we have landscaping components in our projects, we commission specialist ecologists to assess these areas and recommend management practices, mitigating actions where habitat loss is unavoidable, and species that should be planted in landscaped areas to reflect local native flora and fauna.
