Govan Interchange project scoops Scottish Transport Award

Govan Interchange project scoops Scottish Transport Award image

Our transformation of the Govan Transport Interchange has helped Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) pick up the prestigious ‘Integrated Transport Project of the Year’ at the Scottish Transport Awards 2018.

The Awards bring together Scotland’s transport community to “recognise and celebrate industry achievements”.

Now in their 16th year, the Awards were held in Glasgow’s Radisson Blu Hotel on Thursday 14th June.

SPT commissioned us to support the modernisation of Glasgow’s subway and bus station network as part of an overall £288 million programme.

Govan is one of 11 transport projects, across eight separate site locations, where we have partnered with SPT to deliver a best value, commercially viable upgrade to public facing areas.

Our revamp at Govan included both the subway station and bus station, enabling the Interchange to act as a key junction with Fastlink on Golspie Street in the service of around one million passengers a year.

Govan Transport Interchange works

Work at the Govan Transport Interchange began in May 2015 and concluded in June 2016 following a robust 55-week construction programme.

In addition to providing better connections to the bus station, the Govan upgrade also introduced passenger lifts and other enhancement measures, such as hearing loops, tactile maps and paving, and colour contrast flooring, which have served to vastly improve ‘access for all’.

Furthermore, the inclusion of canopies at the entrances of the subway station have improved the flow of traffic through the station from the subway to bus services and vice versa.

Other improvements include:

  • A new modern ticket office
  • New flooring, wall and ceiling finishes
  • New way finding, information and signage for passengers
  • Brighter, more welcoming energy efficient lighting
  • The installation of four new escalators.
