From Classroom to Construction Site: Maher Amin’s Early Career Journey at GRAHAM

For Maher Amin, the appeal of construction was clear: the chance to see the tangible results of his work and make a meaningful contribution. Only a few weeks into his role with GRAHAM Interior Fit-Out, Maher is already progressing in his professional journey.

Maher joined GRAHAM Interior Fit-Out as an Assistant Site Manager after graduating last month from Westminster University with First Class Honours in Quantity Surveying and Commercial Management. Remarkably, he entered the industry with no previous construction experience, making his rapid progress even more impressive.

Transitioning from university to a live construction site came with its challenges. While Maher’s degree equipped him with theoretical knowledge, stepping into a live project environment was a whole new experience. “At first, the transition was slightly challenging,” Maher admits. “But being on-site with GRAHAM allowed me to adapt quickly. I’ve learned directly from experienced colleagues and project managers who, despite their busy schedules, always took the time to explain the programme and keep me included.”

Maher has already seen how effective communication and quick problem-solving can prevent issues before they arise. He’s also been able to apply his academic understanding of risk management to real-life scenarios, ensuring health and safety remains a top priority on-site.

Working on the high-profile Marks & Spencer Pantheon project has boosted Maher’s confidence and shown him the value of responsibility. “It’s helped me realise how I can contribute meaningfully,” he says. “I now want to pursue a higher role in project management and develop my skills to reach that goal.”

Maher encourages others starting out in construction to be curious and proactive. “Don’t be afraid to ask questions and learn from those around you. People are happy to share what they’re doing, as long as you ask.”

Although he’s only three weeks into his role, Maher is already thinking about the future. His next steps include gaining more site experience, developing technical and managerial skills, and working towards chartership with the CIOB. His long-term ambition? To become a project manager within GRAHAM Interior Fit-Out.

“The team has been incredibly supportive. From site managers to directors, everyone has welcomed me and taken the time to answer my questions. The experience so far has been fantastic, and I’m excited to keep learning and progressing within GRAHAM.”
