GRAHAM has completed the construction of a mental health facility in Liverpool. Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust has claimed the keys for Mossley Hill Mental Health Care Facility, which is the newest healthcare unit of its kind in the NHS which will end dormitory style care in Liverpool.
The new 80-bed inpatient unit has been built on the site of the old Mossley Hill Hospital and consolidates services from across the city. It was subject to extensive public engagement in 2016, and more recently sessions with service users, patients, carers and staff who decided on colour schemes, artwork and the names for parts of the site. During the 30-month build, GRAHAM, alongside their partners, worked with local schools and colleges, employed apprentices, and two local under-18s on work experience, as well as investing in the local economy by employing firms from the nearby area.
Throughout the project, air source heat pumps and modern construction methods ensured high energy efficiency and materials from the demolished building were reused. The historic mansion adjoining the site was retained and has now been sold. The project also includes trees, gardens, cycle parking and electric vehicle charging points, to create a sustainable, state of the art facility that provides a safe and welcoming environment for patients and the community.
Dave Sweeney, Chair of Liverpool and Sefton Health Partnership (LSHP) said: “This is the third project of its kind that Mersey Care has commissioned LSHP to provide Project Management services for. I’m delighted we’re now ready to start preparing the finished site for patients and staff.”
Elaine Siew, CEO of gbpartnerships, added: “The Mossley Hill project is an excellent example of effective collaboration to successfully deliver a healthcare facility despite the significant challenges imposed by the pandemic. After years of planning and hard work from various contributors, we’re delighted this superbly designed building will soon be ready to offer improved, high-quality services to its patients.”
Peter Reavey, Regional Director at GRAHAM said: “GRAHAM are extremely proud to have delivered the new Mossley Hill Hospital. This project was a challenging, but a very rewarding experience with true partnering with LSHP, Mersey Care, our design team and supply chain. The new hospital building will provide much-needed care for the Greater Merseyside region.”
After the internal fitting is finished by the Trust, outpatient clinics will open and service users and patients will transfer in late Autumn 2025. Mossley Hill Mental Health Care Facility stands as a benchmark for innovation and collaboration between Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust, LSHP, GRAHAM and all partners, showcasing specialist design and construction that delivers modern, patient-focused facilities and raises the standards in mental health care.
