Project Summary

The Pavilion Study Centre is a new 28,000 sq ft pupil referral unit in Barnet, providing 73 young people with a modern, purpose-built learning environment. Replacing outdated temporary accommodation, the facility combines specialist teaching spaces, wellbeing-focused design and community sports facilities, helping students who cannot attend mainstream education feel valued, supported and inspired to achieve their potential.

Project Detail

This project involved the construction of a modern, purpose-built school to replace ageing and overcrowded temporary portacabin accommodation, creating a high-quality learning environment that supports both educational outcomes and pupil wellbeing.

Delivered on a live school campus, the scheme required careful planning and phased construction to ensure the school remained fully operational throughout the build programme. Extensive stakeholder engagement with local residents, community groups, Sport England and the local authority was undertaken to successfully manage site constraints, maintain support for the development and minimise disruption during construction.

GRAHAM delivered a state-of-the-art educational facility centred around a landscaped courtyard, providing a bright, spacious and welcoming setting for learning and social interaction. The new building incorporates specialist teaching accommodation including science, art and technology workshops, an IT suite, music and drama spaces, together with a sports hall and multi-use games area. The design promotes flexibility, passive supervision and inclusive learning through clear sightlines, breakout areas and dedicated intervention and respite spaces. Specialist classrooms benefit from direct access to outdoor learning environments, while sports facilities have been designed with independent access to support community use beyond school hours. Sustainable features, including rooftop solar panels, natural ventilation and sustainable drainage systems, further enhance the development, creating a future-focused educational campus that meets the needs of pupils, staff and the wider community.

What they had to say

“When young people arrived at our old buildings, their feelings of rejection and failure were often reinforced by the accommodation that they were faced with. Our new building has changed all that, and now young people arrive with a feeling of hope. They recognise that they are valued and have a real chance to start again.”

Joanne Kelly, Headteacher, The Pavilion Study Centre
